#13 Fulbright Album

Today’s item comes from the Archive, and it doesn’t get much more personal than this.

These pictures are from an album that belonged to US Senator James William Fulbright, who attended Pembroke about 100 years ago. He is still remembered in the international fellowship programme that bears his name, and the Fulbright lectures continue to be given at Pembroke into the present.

1. He matriculated at Pembroke in 1925

2. He was a contemporary of R.B. McCallum who would become Pembroke's Master in 1955

3. This personal scrapbook was donated to Pembroke by his granddaughter in 2019

4. The album is 27cm wide and 35cm tall

5. The album is made up of thick black paper leaves with a brown mock crocodile cover, punched and with a brown cord tie

6. The album includes press cuttings and memorabilia relating to his sporting prowess with the Arkansas Razorbacks football team

7. It also contains photos and memorabilia relating to his time at Pembroke such as invitations and menu cards, photographs, domestic and social papers

8. One folio contains his letter of appointment as a Special Attorney with the Department of Justice in Washington DC, 7 Aug 1934

9. The album also contains photos and memorabilia from holidays and travel, and a number of loose enclosures include a photo of Fulbright with R.B. McCallum at Oxford when they were both students at Pembroke

10. The album was conserved and digitised in 2019
