The College is saddened at the news of the death of Foundation Fellow Christina Lee Look, former director of Hong Kong TVB and widow of Pembroke College alumnus Harold Hsiao-Wo Lee (1928, Law).

To celebrate this day at Pembroke, we reached out to Dr Lois Brand, Stipendiary Lecturer in Medicine and Lead for the College’s Clinical Course, and to our current JCR President and Biochemistry Undergraduate, Rhiannon Durant, to learn about their experiences in their respective fields and why they enjoy their subjects. We also asked them to share advice for girls and women hoping to start a career in STEM.

Congratulations to Professor Henrietta Harrison, Pembroke’s Stanley Ho Fellow and Tutor in Chinese, for releasing her new book ‘The Perils of Interpreting: The Extraordinary Lives of Two Translators between Qing China and the British Empire.’

This series brings together experts and Fellows of the Foundation to explore issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in Japan.

The Pembroke College Tutorials Plus grant provides access to funds that enrich students’ learning and support activities such as subject talks or academic visits. Lucien Whitworth (2019, English Language and Literature) has recently been awarded a grant to visit The National Archives of Ireland in Dublin.

In November 2021, Pembroke College hosted alumnus and Honorary Fellow Lord Heseltine (PPE, 1951) to give a lecture titled ‘A World Turned Upside Down’. Lord Heseltine is founder and Chairman of the Haymarket Group, and was a Member of Parliament for nearly four decades.

Chosen by the College’s Art Committee in consultation with the Fellowship and the student body, the selection is changed annually to feature six of our alumni.

‘Preventing the Next Pandemic’ was the title of this year’s Annual Fulbright Distinguished Lecture in International Relations, which was the eleventh of its kind. Dr Devi Sridhar, Professor of Global Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, delivered the engaging and lively lecture to a full Auditorium on the 19th of November 2021.

Alex Welch (2018, Biochemistry) has recently taken advantage of the Pembroke College Tutorials Plus grant to attend virtually the 2021 International mRNA Health Conference. The grant provides access to funds that enrich students’ learning and support activities such as subject talks or visits to subject-specific learning opportunities.
