On Tuesday 14th November, we welcomed Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton as the guest speaker of Pembroke’s annual Blackstone Lecture, with this year’s discussion centring on ‘The Resolution of Conflict and Making Peace: The Role of Women and Human Rights’.

Last week we held our annual Scholars' Lecture and Dinner in celebration of our undergraduate students' achievements, and to formally admit new Scholars and Exhibitioners to their titles. This year's lecture was hosted by Professor Ana Namburete, focusing on her newly published research into fetal brain development during pregnancy.

In recognition of Trans Day of Remembrance, the day in which we remember all those whose lives have been lost to anti-trans violence, Librarian Laura Cracknell has put together a book display of resources to read and learn more about the experiences of the trans community.

We’re excited to share that four Pembrokians from across the College community have contributed to a recently published book on “Transnational Approaches to Modern Japan and the Wider World”, titled Reopening the Opening of Japan.

Our 2023 Celebrating Success series continues with fourth-year Biologist Ruth Arnold, who was awarded the Louise Johnson Prize for demonstrating meritorious work in her Trinity examinations.

How do you make a dictionary? Following the recent discovery of editors' proofs (showing handwritten edits) from the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, an event on 17th November will feature talks from a variety of academics, including Pembroke's Professor Lynda Mugglestone, on the life and work of second OED editor Henry Bradley and his contribution to the dictionary which remains at the forefront of lexicography today. 

Pembroke Rokos Fellow and Tutor in Computer Science Professor Ana Namburete and her team have developed machine learning methods to construct the first digital map showing how the fetal brain matures as pregnancy advances.

We are pleased to announce the renaming of the College’s Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry to the Holger Kramer Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship has been named in memory of Dr Holger Kramer, a former Biochemistry tutor at Pembroke who died suddenly last year.

During the UK Environmental Audit Committee’s 25th Anniversary at Imperial College earlier this year, Pembroke Lecturer in Engineering Dr Nicole Miranda pitched for the Committee to launch an inquiry on heat adaptation in the UK. She won this pitch and last month, the EAC started gathering evidence for an inquiry titled ‘Heat Resilience and Sustainable Cooling’.
