Pembroke Honorary Fellow Sara Miller McCune Receives London Book Fair Lifetime Achievement Award

NEWS |

We are thrilled to announce that Pembroke Honorary Fellow, Sara Miller McCune (SAGE Publishing founder and Executive Chairman) has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the London Book Fair. Each year, this award recognises an individual who has made a ‘truly significant’ mark in the sphere of global publishing.

Sara founded SAGE Publishing in 1965 at the age of 24 and throughout the following decades she oversaw its global expansion, founding major publishing houses in the UK (1971), India (1981) and Singapore (2006). SAGE is a leading international provider of innovative, high-quality content and publishes more than 900 journals and over 800 new books each year, which cover a broad range of subject areas. Today, Sara remains actively involved in the company’s expansion and development, and still serves as the Executive Chairman.

Sara commented: ‘I am a passionate supporter of what I call the four justices – economic, educational, environmental, and social – on an international scale, and I view the work of SAGE Publishing as pivotal to their advancement as we build bridges from ideas to usable knowledge. I receive this award as acknowledgment of my pledge to this work and an endorsement to continue to improve the world of scholarship and education for the long-term future.’

The Master of Pembroke College, Dame Lynne Brindley (former Chief Executive of the British Library) was delighted to introduce Sara at the ceremony on 10th April 2018. She spoke not only of Sara’s invaluable contribution to the world of publishing, but also to her commitment to Pembroke College as an Honorary Fellow.

She remarked that:

‘Sara has personally supported Pembroke College Oxford in our ground-breaking work to raise academic aspirations and attainment in schools, in under-represented areas of the country, and in socially deprived locations to enable students to make competitive applications to Oxford and Russell Group Universities, and to thrive in such an intellectually challenging environment. We are proud that she is an Honorary Fellow of the College.’
