Pembroke to accredit with Living Wage Foundation

NEWS |

Pembroke has been paying its staff the living wage since 2012, and this week Governing Body took the decision to formally accredit with the Living Wage Foundation.

Pembroke students have long been involved in promoting the living wage campaign in Oxford. The JCR President, Ben Nabarro, who was present at the Governing Body meeting, welcomed the move, saying “This has been a central issue for the JCR and it's fantastic to see Pembroke commit to accreditation. Pembroke does currently pay the living wage but it's important to give staff the security of a binding commitment. Colleges have an obligation to be responsible employers.”

Dame Lynne Brindley, the Master, added “I am delighted that Governing Body has agreed to seek formal accreditation, reaffirming the value we place on our staff and building on a commitment Pembroke made some time ago to pay the living wage and additional benefits.”

The current national living wage is £7.85 per hour (compared to the national minimum wage of £6.50) and is recalculated annually in November taking into account the real cost of living.  For more information see http://www.livingwage.org.uk/
