Bagpipes and Castanets in the Master's Lodgings

NEWS |

Each term the Master hosts music recitals in her Lodgings at which Pembroke students and staff are invited to perform, and all College members are welcome to join the audience.

The February 2015 event set a new standard in eclectic programming when, in addition to voice, violins, trumpet, piano and cello, it featured both bagpipes and castanets on the same evening - surely a Pembroke first!

Playing to a packed Oak Room fresher undergraduate Patrick Kenny's Medley of Traditional Tunes was a centrepiece of the evening, as he took time out from his Arabic and Islamic Studies course to introduce Pembroke to the bagpipes.

Performing in front of the Lodgings' portrait of a solemn Samuel Johnson, Music Lecturers Guy Newbury and Nicola Harrison delighted the audience with their piano and castanet finale.
