Arabic (and other Middle Eastern Languages)

Our tutors are looking for students who...

  • Have a robust work ethic. Acquiring a good command of Arabic or another Middle Eastern language is rewarding, but it takes many hours of revision and memorisation!
  • Are careful writers. The best way to work out your interpretation of a primary text or your view on a major academic controversy is through clear, argumentative, and well-supported prose.
  • Have curiosity and a broad mind. The Middle East is a fascinating meeting ground of different communities, languages and religions. We want to see you develop your own interests and expertise and make full use of everything that Oxford and the year abroad have to offer.

Oscar Kanan - Arabic with Turkish

I was fortunate to travel to Istanbul for two weeks over the summer to attend a Turkish language school in preparation for my final year. I am grateful to Pembroke for awarding me the Alan Jones Travel Prize which was invaluable in making possible what was a rewarding and memorable trip.

Opportunities

Book Grants

Pembroke Arabic and Middle Eastern Languages students are eligible for £100 of funding in their first year and another £100 in their final year towards the cost of books for their course for personal use.

Students benefit from one of the two largest collections of books relating to the Middle East of any undergraduate college, and special travel funds.

Brian Wilson Scholarships

These scholarships, one in Arabic and one in Chinese, are worth £1,500 each per annum and are awarded to final year undergraduates on tutors’ recommendation.
