World Championship Silver for Pembroke Duo

Ellie Piggott (2012) and Brianna Stubbs (current DPhil) have won silver as part of the Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls crew at this year’s World Championships.

Along with their rowing partners Ruth Walcock and Emily Craig, they pushed bronze medal winners The Netherlands into third position, securing their place on the podium alongside winners Germany.

Ellie expressed her excitement in a message to the College’s Master, Dame Lynne Brindley: “It has been a fantastic week of racing, and I’m thrilled with our medal. We had a great race in the final, rowing back through the Australian crew, and holding off a fast finishing Dutch crew in the last 250m of the race.”

The Pembroke duo already have an impressive international record on the river. In 2013, they won the gold medal in the women’s double scull at the World Rowing Championships in Austria.

For Ellie, however, participation in the sport is not just about claiming those elusive medals, but also about the sense of unity and cooperation it brings: “All of the Great Britain boats have performed really well, so there is a fantastic atmosphere in the team, which is great to be part of.”
