Success on the river for Pembroke Boat Club

NEWS |

Wednesday to Saturday of 5th week saw the annual Summer Eights regatta take place in Oxford. 170 crews from colleges took part in the bumps-style event with Pembroke College Boat Club (PCBC) once again enthusiastically turning out - this year seven crews donned the traditional pink lycra and took to the river.

As ever, competition was fierce and the women's boats struggled to make progress, with W3 bumped down a place every day and W2 only suffering one fewer displacement. W1 fought hard to maintain their place at 4th in the top division - bumped off it on Wednesday they regained the spot on Friday and defended it on Saturday.

The Men's boats had more success overall, although M3 also gained "spoons" for four consecutive bumpings. M2 fought hard to eventually move up into Divsion 2 - there is only one other seconds crew placed higher. M1 couldn't defend their headship - losing out on Thursday to a very fast Oriel crew and not regaining the slot. However, honour of the week goes to the M4 crew who managed to bump up a place every day - earning the coveted "blades" and finishing up a Division.

PCBC is Pembroke’s largest student organisation and one of the most successful boat clubs in Oxford. In the last 20 years PCBC has had more women’s and men’s crews in the top three positions on the river than any other college, and is the first and only boat club to have held both the Men’s and the Women’s Summer VIIIs Head of the River (in 2003). PCBC is a high achieving club, with members rowing for University and National Squads, but is also all-inclusive, welcoming members of all rowing levels.
