Scholars’ Lecture and Dinner, 2016

On the 9th November 2016, the annual Scholars’ Lecture and Dinner was held at Pembroke to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the College’s undergraduate Scholars and Exhibitioners.

Pembroke Fellows, Professor Hannah Smithson and Professor Clive Siviour, delivered the 2016 Pembroke Scholars’ Lecture titled ‘In the Eye of the Beholder?’

Prof. Smithson is a Pembroke Fellow and Tutor in Psychology and an Associate Professor of Experimental Psychology. Her research focuses on the neural mechanisms that underlie perception and she is particularly interested in how movements of the eyes help us to pick out relevant details from our visual surroundings. She spoke about the importance of eye movements for perception and the challenge and thrill of imaging tiny biological structures ‘in vivo’, using a new ophthalmoscope designed and manufactured by her research group.

Prof. Siviour is a Pembroke Tutor in Engineering Science, the Richard and Ester Lee Fellow in Engineering Science and Associate Professor of Engineering Science. His research investigates the behaviour of materials and structures when subjected to impact loading. Complementing Prof. Smithson’s talk, he spoke about his particular interest in the use of high speed photography, and the application of quantitative image analysis techniques, to enhance our understanding of very rapid events.

The Master of Pembroke College, Dame Lynne Brindley said ‘The occasion of the Scholars’ Lecture and Dinner is one for celebration and congratulations. It is a wonderful opportunity to recognise our Scholars and Exhibitioners, their achievements and success, and especially to celebrate the admission of new Scholars and Exhibitioners to that group of people who are regarded as the best of their cohort.’
