Pembroke MSt History Graduate Katie Fapp Receives Carwardine Prize

Congratulations to Katie Fapp (MSt History, 2018), who has recently been awarded the Carwardine Prize following her outstanding contribution to the study of US History.

Bestowed annually, the Carwardine prize is given to the US History Masters student adjudged to be the outstanding individual of the year. The prize is awarded not only on the basis of final marks, but also through taking into consideration the enthusiasm and enterprise that a student brings to their course throughout the academic year.

Katie was awarded the prize following her innovative research into women’s suffrage in the west and the historical memory of the American Civil War. Her academic supervisor, Dr Stephen Tuffnell, commented: ‘Katie was a more than worthy recipient of the award’ and that her submitted work was ‘written with verve and panache’.

Upon receiving the prize, Katie expressed her gratitude to those who had played a significant role in her academic journey, stating: ‘I feel very honoured to have received the Carwardine Award, and am very grateful towards the Rothermere American Institute for both the prize and providing such a great academic community during my degree. My dissertation project focused on the memory of the American Civil War in the early twentieth century, and specifically on how films about the conflict produced around the war’s 50th anniversary shaped and changed both popular memories of and the way Americans remembered the war.'
