Pembroke Celebrates Chinese New Year

NEWS |

Students at Pembroke gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year on the evening of Tuesday 9th February at a dinner hosted by the Master, Dame Lynne Brindley, and Dr Tim Brindley.

The dinner brought together Chinese students from across the College who are studying for a range of degree courses.

2nd year DPhil student in Engineering Science, Ming Li, commented: "The Chinese New Year dinner impressed me not only for nicely prepared Chinese style food but also offering a good platform to meet interesting people and broaden my perspective''.

Jingyi Ma, 3rd year DPhil in Clinical Medicine, added: 'I feel so blessed with the home touch on this very special day of the year!'

A programme of Oxford-wide events was hosted by The Oxford Chinese Students and Scholars Association (OXCSSA), with film nights, traditional games, a food festival, academic talks and more taking place across the city in fourth week.

Guowei Tao, M.Sc student in Engineering Science at Pembroke, is the Director of Liaison for OXCSSA and helped to publicise the 2016 Oxford Chinese Culture Week. For Guowei, bridging the gap between the Oxford Chinese community and UK is an important role, and involves seeking opportunities for learning and collaboration:

'I would like promote cultural exchange and interaction between China and UK, so as to strengthen the understanding and friendship between these two countries.'
