Oxbotica Receives 2017 Financial Times ArcelorMittal Boldness in Business Award

The Financial Times ArcelorMittal Boldness in Business Awards ceremony took place in London on 16th March 2017. Oxbotica, the robotics developer cofounded by Pembroke Fellow and Tutor in Engineering, Professor Ingmar Posner and BP Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford, Professor Paul Newman, took home the ‘Smaller Company Award’.

To mark the occasion, The Financial Times have published a report on Prof. Posner, Prof. Newman and the Oxbotica journey so far. In the article, ‘Oxbotica Unlocks the Potential of Driverless Cars’, Financial Times journalist Peter Campbell spoke to the duo about the foundation of the company, its finances, clientele and future expansion.

Unique in comparison to most start-ups, which tend to stem from a single idea, Oxbotica started with 43 ideas. In the article, Prof. Posner reflects on the wide applicability of Oxbotica’s research; arguing that they don’t market themselves purely as a driverless car group and that their research in mobile autonomy can be applied to diverse fields. Discussing the specificities of each client, he mentions NASA’s need for a particular aspect of technology for their Mars rover: Oxbotica vision sensors.

Prof. Posner and Prof. Newman are clear about their ambitions for Oxbotica. Undeterred by the size of the competition, which includes technology giants Google and Baidu, Prof. Newman explains to Campbell that Oxbotica is very much in the race when it comes to this kind of technology.
