Over 250 People Visit Pembroke College JCR Art Gallery for Oxford Open Doors

On Sunday 10th September the Pembroke College JCR Art Gallery swung open its doors for the annual city-wide festival ‘Oxford Open Doors’ which is organised by the Oxford Preservation Trust. They welcomed over 250 visitors across three hours.

Curator of Art, Clara Chivers commented, ‘Oxford Open Doors provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with our local community and this year we were delighted to highlight the unique art collection housed in Pembroke.’

The Pembroke JCR Art Collection was established in 1947 by undergraduate, Anthony Emery, as the first student-owned art collection in the University of Oxford. Remaining under student ownership, it has grown to comprise over 200 works of art including paintings, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture and digital works.

The collection is particularly rich in post-war modern British art, containing works by Patrick Heron, Prunella Clough, Lynn Chadwick and Elizabeth Frink, among others. The 2017 Open Doors exhibition displayed a range of works by renowned artists, alongside pieces by up-and-coming artists.

The Gallery, located on 5 Brewer Street, has existed since 2013 and is usually open to the public during the University term on Wednesdays and Fridays between 12pm and 2pm. In recent years the Gallery has hosted a range of exhibitions, including displays of its permanent collection, artist residencies and loan shows.

The upcoming exhibition ‘Rachel Owen: The Inferno Illustrations’ will run from 18th October until 1st December 2017. Visit the website for more information.
