Lord-Lieutenants are voluntary representatives of the Crown for each county across the United Kingdom; appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. They are responsible for organising all official Royal visits to their county and on behalf of the Queen they present decorations (such as the British Empire Medal). Aside from these formal duties, Lord-Lieutenants also work across county life—supporting the voluntary sector and building relationships across other fields; including the police, the military, the magistracy, schools and other academic institutions; the civic authorities and business.
