JCR Students Announce ‘Pembrokians of the Year’

NEWS |

Pembroke’s JCR committee has announced that three undergraduates – Farheen Ahmed, Vicky Firth and Ronni Blackford – have been jointly named ‘Pembrokian of the Year’.

The winners were announced at the final JCR meeting of Trinity Term, on Sunday 5th June, selected from a range of strong nominations and accompanying testimonials.

Farheen Ahmed was described in her testimonial as a ‘happy, jovial soul’ who should be recognised for her work on liberation issues and her ‘outstanding dedication and commitment to her role as Racial Ethnic Minorities (REM) Rep’ on the Pembroke JCR Committee.

In addition to being the leader of the Liberation Council and chief organiser behind the recent Diversity Week, Farheen was the principal Light and Sound Manager of the Pembroke Musical ‘Cabaret’ and the sound manager of 'The Bald Prima Donna', which was performed as part of Pembroke Arts Week.

Ronni Blackford was recognised for her voluntary work with the Pembroke JCR Committee. Her testimonial stated that she ‘has doubled the number of Peminists sessions per term, arranged numerous speaker events and fostered a real community’.

Ronni also impressed with her management of the JCR Special Academic Committee, with which she produced a report and has continued to lobby for improvement across the College and JCR community.

Vicky Firth is a Pembroke Peer Supporter and former OUSU Rep on the JCR committee, who was described in her testimonial as being dedicated to ‘making Pembroke and the wider university a better place to study’.  She was also praised for the diversity of her achievements, from impressive academic results to participation in a university orchestra.

On her award, Vicky commented: ‘It means a lot to be nominated by such a great student body, and especially as a finalist coming to the end of my time here at Pembroke, it was such a lovely surprise. Congratulations as well to the other winners, who both thoroughly deserve it.’
