From 4th-8th July 2016, Pembroke hosted the inaugural ‘ICVS Summer School’ run by the International Colour Vision Society.

Students and teachers alike were brought together by a mutual passion for colour vision. The school hosted 35 students – largely post-docs and graduate students – from a total of 19 countries: Germany, Norway, Holland, Spain, Georgia, Serbia, Ireland, France, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Hungry, UK, Brazil, USA, China, Japan, Korea and India.

18 teachers, who were academics or company representatives, offered half-hour lectures or extended talks throughout the week. 12 full studentships were awarded, with support from the Summer School sponsors: ICVS, Shamir Portugal, the Colour Group GB, ITOH Optical Industrial, the Optical Society of America and Cambridge Research Systems.

Student feedback illustrated the academic rigour and social opportunities presented by the Summer School, with one attendee commenting: ‘I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet other colour scientists and learn about current debates and topics’.

Another student added: ‘There were talks on a range of different topics relating to colour vision, which meant that there was a nice selection of perspectives. The atmosphere of the summer school was also really lovely making it fun to be a part of and easy to approach people’.

The ICVS Summer School organising committee comprised Pembroke Fellow Professor Hannah Smithson, Professor Sérgio Nascimento from the University of Minho, and Professor Neil Parry of the University of Manchester.
