First-year historians explore Bodleian's treasures
NEWS |
Pembroke's first-year historians had a special visit to the Weston Library last term for a fascinating session at the Centre for the Study of the Book. The students were shown a range of manuscripts and printed books by Dr Alexandra Franklin (Co-ordinator, Centre for the Study of the Book) and Mike Webb (Curator of Early Modern Manuscripts, Bodleian Library).
It was an introduction to book history that went hand in hand with the students' study of the rise of print in Europe in the fifteenth century, an important topic explored in their first-year course, European and World History III: 1400-1650 (Renaissance, Recovery, and Reform).

Seeing a 1610 copy of Galileo's astronomical treatise Sidereus Nuncius printed in Venice was a particular highlight. This copy did not have moon engravings in it but it did have space for them - an interesting insight into how the printing process worked!
All in all, 'it was an extraordinary privilege to be able to view some of the Bodleian's treasures', shared their tutor Dr Catherine Jenkinson, College Lecturer in History and Julian Schild Junior Research Fellow.
