Dr Guy Newbury Performs Rediscovered Butterworth Piece on BBC Radio 3

Pianist and Pembroke Stipendiary Lecturer in Music, Dr Guy Newbury, recently played a setting of Robert Bridge’s ‘Crown Winter With Green’, accompanying baritone John Lee.  Their recorded performance was broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ on 12th December (from 39:40).

This version of the yuletide song, set by George Butterworth (who studied at Trinity College, Oxford), was found recently in the Bodleian Music Faculty Library, among unedited manuscripts. On the programme, the Alfred Brendel Curator at the Bodleian Library, Dr Martin Holmes, spoke about the significance of this discovery, which comes one century after Butterworth’s death in the First World War.

The manuscript is on display, alongside some portraits of Butterworth, from Wednesday 14th December until Sunday 19th December in the Bodleian Library (Weston Library). The display is accompanied by a listening station where visitors can hear a recording of the piece.
