Dr Annette Idler – Director of Studies of the Changing Character of War Programme at Pembroke – is the 2015 recipient of the Cedric Smith prize.

The Cedric Smith prize is awarded annually by the Conflict Research Society for the best piece of UK-based peace and conflict research.

Dr Idler’s paper, 'Complex Cooperation: Shifting Alliances among Rebels, Paramilitaries and Criminals', is based on over one year of fieldwork in Colombia's war-torn border areas.

She explains: “It helps understand the security dynamics in these regions, and can be used as a starting point to help understand conflict dynamics resulting from fragile alliances among violent non-state groups in places such as Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo or Afghanistan”.

The judging panel included editors of major political science journal and stated that although there were a record number of entries for 2015, the winning paper “breaks new ground in the field of peace and conflict research and the analysis”.

Dr Idler, also a research associate for the Centre on Conflict, Development & Peacebuilding, attended the CRS Annual Conference on 14th-15th September and addressed the plenary with a talk on her research.
