Can pricing algorithms cause collusion?

Pembroke's Professor Ariel Ezrachi is co-author with Professor Maurice Stucke of The University of Tennessee of a new paper: Artificial Intelligence & Collusion: When Computers Inhibit Competition.

Their paper explores the possibilities for, and consequences of, price collusion that have arisen with the development of complicated computer algorithms by companies operating online: "Sophisticated computers are central to the competitiveness of present and future markets. With the accelerating development of Artificial Intelligence, they are set to change the competitive landscape and the nature of competitive restraints. As pricing mechanisms shift to computer pricing algorithms, so too will the types of collusion."

Coverage of this paper has included articles in The New Yorker and Business Insider UK.
