The Cult of Saints and the Body Politic - Lecture by Dr Nikoloz Aleksidze

PAST EVENT | 23 May 2016 19:00 - 23 May 2016 20:30

Part of the Trinity 2016 lecture series entitled 'Armenia. Life and Study of an Enduring Culture', Dr Nikoloz Aleksidze will be giving a lecture on the topic of 'The Cult of Saints and the Body Politic: Dilemmas of Nationhood and Sainthood in the Caucasus'.

Dr Aleksidze is a Junior Research Fellow at Pembroke College, and is based in the History Faculty at the University of Oxford.

The history of the cult of the saints in the Caucasus is exceptional in many ways. But perhaps the most striking characteristic of the formation of the cult of saints is how early in Late Antiquity the cult of relics and of saints acquired political weight among Armenians, Albanians and Georgians.

The Trinity term lecture series has been establised in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Calouste Gulbenkian Professorship in Armenian Studies at Pembroke College, currently held by Professor Theo van Lint.
