Professor Lynda Mugglestone Book Launch: Writing a War of Words
NEWS |
Congratulations to Professor Lynda Mugglestone on the launch of her latest book: Writing a War of Words, which is the the first exploration of the war-time work of Andrew Clark—a writer, historian, and volunteer on the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The book documents changes in the English language from the start of World War One up to 1919, considering the role of language in documenting history and the experiences of "ordinary" people in wartime.
For a full lecture given by Professor Mugglestone on Andrew Clark and the Language of WWI, head to the Bodliean Libraries' Youtube Channel here.
Professor Mugglestone is a Fellow and Tutor in English Language and Literature at Pembroke College and a Professor of the History of English at Oxford. In addition to teaching undergraduates and supervising undergraduate and graduate work on English Language, she has recently co-curated an exhibition at the Weston Library in Oxford on ‘The Art of Advertising.’ Some of Professor Mugglestone's research interests involve language change and standardisation, language attitudes, lexicography from the eighteenth century onwards, and the different kinds of evidence we might use in tracing language history.
