Professor Ana Namburete awarded European Research Council Starting Grant

We are delighted to share that Professor Ana Namburete, Pembroke’s Rokos Fellow and Tutor in Computer Science, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant for her WOMB2COT project.

Ana’s proposal is one of 478 that were selected for funding out of 3,928 applications. Awarded by the European Research Council under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme, Starting Grants are awards of up to €1.5 million for a period of five years given to talented early-career scientists with excellent research proposals. Just over 12% of proposals will receive a grant. Professor Namburete is one of 11 researchers from the University of Oxford to be selected.
Professor Namburete’s WOMB2COT project will extend her pioneering foetal brain imaging techniques into neonatal care, bridging a critical gap in monitoring maturation in infants born prematurely or with growth restrictions.
Her project will advance quantitative brain assessment using ultrasound-derived measures, revealing deeper insights into early brain development. Her team will leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence, computational neuroanatomy, and biophysics-inspired reconstruction methods to reduce known nuisance imaging artefacts and significantly improve image quality. This innovative approach will transform routine ultrasound scans into accurate, high-resolution, three-dimensional images, enabling clinicians to detect subtle developmental vulnerabilities earlier.
By leveraging low-cost ultrasound devices optimised for bedside use, WOMB2COT aims to create a seamless imaging pathway from pregnancy through infancy, making advanced neonatal brain monitoring more accessible in clinical settings.
