Pembroke's Bridge Shortlisted for National Award

The shortlist for the Structural Awards 2013 includes Pembroke’s new bridge in the pedestrian footbridge category. These awards recognise international excellence in structural engineering and previous awards have been made to the London 2012 Velodrome and the King’s Cross Station Redevelopment. The pedestrian bridge category this year has five nominees, including the Olympic Park footbridge alongside our own new structure here at Pembroke.

Pembroke’s bridge forms part of our new development of five buildings and two quadrangle spaces which was constructed between 2011 and 2013, creating a wealth of new facilities for use by the College community. The bridge was critical to the success of the scheme as it provides the means of access to the new area directly from our 19th Century Chapel Quad.

At the time of its construction it was 99 years since Oxford city centre had witnessed the completion of an over-street bridge and the design and engineering of the newest addition was very challenging. The structure spans one of the few remaining narrow medieval streets of Oxford city as well as the old city wall itself (now a scheduled ancient monument). The final result is an elegant and impressive use of corten steel and glass.

John Church, Bursar, says: “We are immensely proud of the final result with our new footbridge which serves to integrate our old and new facilities beautifully. In the course of its design and construction the College received excellent advice and service from our architects, Berman Guedes Stretton, and our structural engineers, Price & Myers. It is wonderful to see their work recognised in this way.”
