Pembroke Wins Green Impact Gold
NEWS |
Earlier this year Pembroke's recent sustainability progress, propelled by an enthusiastic group of students and staff, was recognised with a Gold Green Impact Award.
Green Impact is a United Nations award-winning programme designed to support environmentally and socially sustainable practice in organisations. The programme aligns with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and is an opportunity for staff and students to come together to deliver sustainability changes to their college. More details about the programme can be found here.

Over the first half of 2025, a small team of Pembroke staff and students worked together to build on the College’s existing sustainability initiatives – including our decarbonisation work, our biodiversity site and the café’s returnable cup scheme – to develop and strengthen our sustainable practices and engage the wider College community.

Guided by Green Impact’s toolkit of effective actions, Pembroke took part in University-wide and national programmes such as Green Action Week, Vision Zero and Great Big Green Lunch; delivered events ranging from a Sustainable Travel Breakfast and Gardening Sessions to a student research presentation on meat consumption in Oxford colleges; and implemented changes big and small, from a stationery sharing point to improved waste and recycling procedures. These and other actions were reviewed by the University Green Impact team, earning us the Gold award at the end of the programme.

As a College we are committed to reducing our impact on the planet and creating an environment where sustainable choices are the norm. Alongside initiatives which engage the whole community with sustainable day-to-day actions, we are working on a number of larger-scale decarbonisation and biodiversity projects in line with our Sustainability Strategy.
