Pembroke Students Produce Video About Disability Provision in College

NEWS |

Pembroke undergraduates and members of the 2017-18 Access Committee Holly Roach (MBiochem Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 2016) and Graham Mogridge (Philosophy, Politics and Economics, 2016) recently produced a set of videos to inform prospective applicants, the current College community and the wider public about what it is like living and studying at Pembroke with a disability.

Holly explained the reasoning behind the project:

‘Last year I was the JCR Disabilities Representative. One of my main goals was to raise awareness of disabilities and the support available to students with disabilities. As someone with dyslexia it takes me longer than my peers to complete my work and the main problem I had in my first year was knowing where I could get support.

However, with just a little bit of looking there are masses of people out there, willing to help! These people range from the student disabilities representatives to your tutors, and the College Academic Office to the staff at the University’s Disability Advisory Service. I saw it as my job to raise the awareness of all the support available for students with disabilities and hence went on to make a short film about it.’

This project involved working closely with Pembroke’s Academic Office and Communications team, who helped to put together an accurate and engaging resource. Graham and Holly were particularly keen that this resource would speak directly to applicants and current students, so they interviewed students that currently live in College with a disability, hearing their stories first-hand.

The pair worked with a local digital media company, Pedestrian Media, to deliver this project. They also developed a set of videos to ‘demystify’ the interview process, which are set to launch later this year.
