300 Year 12 Pupils Attend Online Subject Events

NEWS |

Our spring subject events programme was once again well attended by Year 12 pupils who were interested in finding out more about some of our undergraduate degree courses.  This is the second year we have held these online, a format which allows for a much larger attendance than our former in-person offerings.

Open to all state school pupils in Year 12 across the UK, the events consisted of a subject lecture from a tutor, with attendees receiving a pre-recorded admissions video in advance. Pupils were also given the opportunity to ask questions to the tutors during the sessions.

Close to 300 pupils attended across the series of four events which included Maths (with Aurelio Carlucci), Physics & Philosophy (with Dr James Read and Laurence Wroe), Maths & Philosophy, and Engineering (with Professor Nick Hawes).

Aurelio Carlucci (Maths) reflected on the pupil engagement, commenting: “Taking part in the Maths subject event was a rewarding experience. The online format posed some challenges, for both the organisers and the students: however, this allowed a larger number of participants, and I am glad we could offer this opportunity to many.

The addition of a Q&A session was thoughtful, as it allowed extensive discussion without interrupting the main lecture. Several students took the opportunity to follow up with mathematical questions, but even more wanted to ask about the interview process, and about choosing to study mathematics at university level.

Overall, I hope we managed to (at least partially) satisfy each participant's curiosity.”
