Zsolt Enyedi: The ideology of the Orban regime
PAST EVENT | 04 March 2021 17:30
The values of liberal democracy are often challenged by illiberal practices and by radical movements. Established political actors, on the other hand, rarely claim to offer an alternative to liberal democracy. Viktor Orban, who is in his fifteenth year as Prime Minister of Hungary, is an exception, at least in Europe. The once fiercely liberal politician, who spent months at Pembroke with a Soros grant, underwent a major ideological transformation and became one of the leaders and symbols of the world-wide illiberal and populist wave. The talk - and conversation - will provide a background to this transformation and it will address some of the implications of the new ideological conflicts in Europe.
