Tolkien 'A Secret Vice' 85 Years On - Talk and Q&A with the Editors

PAST EVENT | 29 November 2016 19:00 - 29 November 2016 20:30

In 1931, on a cold dark evening in Oxford, J.R.R. Tolkien gave a lecture on the art of language invention and the relation between myth and language to the Samuel Johnson Society at Pembroke College.

In 2016, Tolkien scholars Dimitra Fimi and Andrew Higgins published the first ever critical study of the essay, reproducing it alongside a new essay and drafts from Tolkien’s manuscripts, accompanied by detailed editorial notes and introductory material.

Now, on November 29th – exactly 85 years after the talk was originally given – the editors of this new Tolkien book will be at Pembroke College to discuss Tolkien's essay and his connections to the college.

The talk and Q+A will be followed by a complimentary drinks reception in Pembroke Middle Common Room, where there will be an opportunity to see a modest collection of Tolkien memorabilia.

This event is free to attend and will take place in the Mary Eccles Hyde Room in Pembroke College. Please register via Eventbrite.
