Week 4 Tuesday, 1st November 5:00-6:30 pm

The Allen & Overy Room, Pembroke College, Oxford

Colophons and the Economy of Salvation

In this lecture the main function of colophons as a place of commemoration is examined. While the origin of this practice is obscure, we shall discuss it in relation to the economy of salvation as conceived by the Latin, Greek, Syrian, and Armenian Church Fathers. An examination of several colophons will provide glimpses into the mentality of medieval Armenians, demonstrating how they endeavoured to increase their chances of redemption on the Judgement Day by contributing to the production and preservation of manuscripts.

Lecture followed by 30-45min discussion

Conveners: Dr David Zakarian & Prof Theo M. van Lint
