The Sir Geoffrey Arthur Building Project

The Sir Geoffrey Arthur Building Project will provide much-needed College accommodation for graduate students and will include 77 ensuite bedrooms (of which four are accessible), 10 shared student kitchens, four one-bedroom flats for couples, a large common room, secure bike storage and ancillary facilities. A separate building will be added on the riverfront, providing four one-bedroom flats for junior academics in a prime location.

Following a short delay to the start date due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the works started on site in November 2020 and are due for completion in Summer 2022.  Using a local construction company, with an excellent record of working in the community, the project is recycling many of the materials of the old building in elements like foundations and landscaping works.

The redevelopment is a response to the College’s strategic aim of providing more housing for its graduate students, and better support for early career academics. Currently, we are able to accommodate all undergraduate students for three years in College-owned accommodation, but only around 25% of our graduate students. With rising demand for housing in Oxford, the new accommodation will mean that Pembroke can house around 60% of our graduate students, and will have a brand-new facility to accommodate junior academics who are new to Oxford.

As well as helping to address this accommodation shortfall, the project will transform the existing site, improving security, communal facilities and the bio-diversity and landscaping around the buildings. The environmental impact of the new building has also been carefully considered.  The planned improvements to the public realm have been particularly well received by the local community during a number of consultations which have taken place during the planning process.

The £14m Project has been majority-funded by financing secured last year on very favourable terms. Donations of £2m are being sought to allow us to maximise its potential to support our graduates and early-career academics. We hope that you will wish to make a gift to Pembroke towards this exciting new facility.
