The Varsity Match: Summer switch to Leicester

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first men’s Varsity Match played at Twickenham, which has sadly been unable to take place at the home of English rugby due to national lockdown restrictions.

Oxford and Cambridge University’s four rugby captains are determined to avoid a second year without a Varsity Match, and have set a new date for the annual ‘Battle of the Blues’ on Sunday, 4 July, 2021.

Oxford captains Fiona Kennedy and George Messum, alongside Cambridge duo Elisha Clark and Steve Leonard, have agreed to take their games from Twickenham to the Mattioli Woods Welford Road Stadium in Leicester.

The switch to Leicester’s iconic stadium, an equidistant point between the two universities, is seen as the best compromise given likely restrictions on numbers.

The new summer date is aligned with the RFU’s current Return to Rugby plan, and will give the students sufficient training and playing time in the build-up to the Varsity Matches.
