Pembroke College Website Accessibility Statement
Pembroke College is committed to providing an accessible web presence that gives members of the public and members of the University community full access to information, courses and activities offered publicly through the web.
This Accessibility Statement will apply to the Pembroke College website. The site was built in 2013 and the College is currently in the process of preparing a new website, to be rolled out in 2021. This new site will aim to meet the standards of The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Our website currently allows users to:
- Listen to most of the website content using a screen reader
- Navigate most of the website using a keyboard
- Zoom up to 200% without text spilling off the screen
We are also making website content as easy to understand as possible.
Below is a list of areas of the site that don’t yet comply with accessibility standards.
Issues with PDFs and Word documents
A lot of PDFs and word documents do not comply with requirements, particularly with regard to being accessible to screen readers. One way in which we are compensating for this with some of our more important documents, such as the student handbook, is to list much of the important information elsewhere on the website, and to ensure that those parts which are only relevant to current students are provided as content on our intranet site. We are also encouraging staff to move away from uploading PDFs where possible and will provide guidelines for staff to upload more accessibility-friendly documents. This will be a key priority when we move to a new website in late 2021.
Issues with video and audio
Not all video content has captions, text or audio description. Although our video hosting platform is YouTube, which creates generally good auto-generated captions, we acknowledge that there are often inaccuracies in these. To work around this, we have begun to regularly subtitle new uploads, particularly videos that are text only and therefore don’t benefit from captioning. We will continue with the proper captioning of videos, and where possible encourage pre-written transcripts from staff providing video content.
Issues with operability
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We want our website to offer the best experience possible for all of our users. We have already taken steps to fix a number of issues, such as underlining text links, strengthening colour contrast on certain menus and making sure all new images provide alternative text. This comes in addition to aforementioned fixes we are working on such as video captioning. We are working with our developers to fix issues as well as carefully considering the impact of future developments, particularly in relation to our new website.
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was prepared on 23 September 2020. It was last reviewed on 23 September 2020.
This website was initially tested on September 16th 2019, in order to identify accessibility issues. The test was carried out by Olamalu on a carefully chosen sample of pages and content types. The test identified a number of areas where the site fell short of the WCAG 2.1 AA standard; Olamalu were commissioned to carry out work to address these. Following the completion of that work, this website was retested in summer 2020. We continue to be in contact with Olamalu about further changes that can be added to improve our website accessibility further.
