J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), as well as his famous literary works, taught at Pembroke for nearly twenty years, having previously worked at the Oxford English Dictionary and the Unversity of Leeds. It was during his time at Pembroke that he wrote The Hobbit and the first two volumes of The Lord of the Rings.
