George Birkbeck Hill

PemBook: Dr Johnson, his friends and critics

Student, 1855-1858

George Birkbeck Hill (1895-1903) was an author and editor, particularly noted for his editions of the works of Samuel Johnson. Although he only received an 'honorary' fourth class degree, due at least in part to serious illness while studying, he went on to become a schoolmaster and writer. On retiring, he began work on Samuel Johnson, and became a noted critic of his works. On his death, he bequeathed his considerable library to the college, where it now forms the core of our Samuel Johnson collection.
