After graduating from Pembroke, Geoffrey Holmes served in the British Army in India before returning in 1950 to Oxford to do research under historian David OggHe taught for seventeen years at the university of Glasgow's history department. From 1969 until retirement in 1983 he taught at Lancaster University. He was elected to a Fellowship of the British Academy in 1983 and was a vice-president of the Royal Historical Society. British Politics in the Age of Anne was a seminal work, re-defining the study of politics of the era following the Glorious Revolution.
