North West Theology & Religious Studies Centre

The North West Theology and Religious Studies Centre at Ashton Sixth Form College offers an academic programme open to Year 12 students in state sixth forms across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Students will have access to lectures and seminars delivered by academics from some of the country’s leading universities and inter-faith discussion events hosted by community groups. There will also be opportunities to apply for an Easter study skills school and a residential summer school at the University of Oxford.

The programme will be focused around a central theme each year, which will be considered from a range of disciplinary and faith perspectives. For the first year, the theme is “War, Faith and Religion”. Speakers will be invited to discuss the relationship between the experience of war and religious faith in different societies, with reference to both historical and contemporary contexts. In 2014, speakers will join us from universities including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Durham University, the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield.

During the college day, the Theology and Religious Studies Centre provides a space for class teaching, private study, tutorials and outreach events for local secondary school pupils. It also houses a collection of theology texts which Ashton Sixth Form students are welcome to use to supplement their A-Level studies.
