Congratulations to Pembroke alumnae, Dr Helen Margolis MBE (1987, Physics) and Natasha Finlayson OBE (1982, Modern History) who were both recently featured in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2019. Helen was awarded an MBE for services for metrology and Natasha an OBE for services to children and families.

The annual list recognises the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom, demonstrating the breadth of service given by people from all backgrounds.

Helen is the Head of Time and Frequency at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). She leads their research activities in optical frequency metrology using femtosecond combs, which are part of the programme to develop a new generation of high accuracy optical atomic clocks based on laser-cooled trapped ions and atoms. Helen is also involved in NPL research on improved methods for comparing optical clocks developed in different laboratories, and is coordinating the European project “Robust optical clocks for international timescales (ROCIT)”.

Upon receiving the honour, Helen commented: “To be awarded an MBE for my contribution to the field is a really proud moment for me. Time and frequency in particular is such a fascinating and rewarding area to work in, and it’s great to see our research having a real impact.”

Natasha was Director of Communications and Policy at ChildLine for 16 years and helped to build public understanding of the nature, prevalence and impact of child abuse. From 2008 until this year she was Chief Executive of Become, the national charity for children in care and care leavers. In this role she helped to introduce a major piece of legislation which allows children to stay with foster carers until they are 21, instead of 18. She is currently Chief Executive of Working Chance, a charity supporting women leaving prison into employment.

Natasha commented: "I'm obviously pleased to be recognised in this way for my work over 30 years for children and families, but everything I've achieved has been as part of a team and a wider organisation. I hope that the OBE will help to draw attention to causes I'm involved with and help them to gain traction and support."

Many congratulations to them both on their outstanding achievements!
