Dr Annette Idler

annette.idler@pmb.ox.ac.ukDr Annette Idler is the Director of Studies at the Changing Character of War Programme, Senior Research Fellow at Pembroke College, and Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford. She is also Research Associate at the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding, Graduate Institute Geneva.
She has conducted extensive fieldwork in the war-torn and crisis-affected borderlands of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, analysing the relationships among rebels, criminals and paramilitary groups and exploring their impact on citizen security.
Dr Idler's interests as an academic, consultant and practitioner lie at the interface of conflict, security and transnational organised crime, especially drug trafficking as well as terrorism, peace building and governance. She is particularly fascinated by the role that violent non-state groups play in these dynamics.

Dr Annette Idler, has spoken to BBC World News about the new peace deal in Colombia.
The peace deal, between Colombian Government and the FARC, comes just over a month after the first deal was rejected in a national vote. This week the agreement bypasses a second national referendum, and proceeds straight to Colombia’s congress.
Dr Annette Idler has been interviewed by Al Jazeera television and BBC World Service radio about the end to the civil war in Colombia, an area of great interest in her academic research.
Taking part in a discussion group broadcast on Al Jazeera’s ‘Inside Story’ programme on 30th August, Annette discussed the recent historic truce between the government in Colombia and the leftist guerrilla group, the FARC.
