Pembroke Art Gallery - Oxford Open Doors 2017
Date and time
10 Sep 2017 12:00 to 15:00
Pembroke JCR Art Gallery, Pembroke College, 5 Brewer Street, OX1 1QN
Pembroke College JCR Art Gallery are delighted to participate in Oxford Open Doors 2017!
Join us on Sunday 10th September between 12pm and 3pm to discover the hidden treasures and stories that comprise Pembroke’s student-owned art collection...
In 1947 Pembroke became the first of the Oxford colleges to establish a student-owned art collection, owing to the vision and efforts of undergraduate Anthony Emery. He sought to enrich College life by establishing a collection that reflected the “art of our time” and also supported the careers of promising young artists; an ethos that continues to shape the collection today.
The collection is particularly strong in post-war British art, among others it contains works by Elizabeth Frink, Prunella Clough, Lynn Chadwick, Patrick Heron and John Minton. In the early years of the collection, Sir Kenneth Clark (then Oxford’s Slade Professor of Fine Art) advised on the initial purchases of nineteen foundation works; today the collection numbers over two hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints.
During Oxford Open Doors the Gallery will display some collection highlights, offering a chance to view works by renowned artists alongside up-and-coming young artists. The curator and a student on the organising committee will be at hand to answer your questions.
The Gallery will be open to the public on Sunday 10th September 2017 between 12pm - 3pm and the entrance is located on 5 Brewer Street, OX1 1QN. The venue has full disabled access. The recent 70th Anniversary Catalogue will be on sale (cash payment only) at a cost of £8 (student discount price £4).
Can't make it? The Gallery is usually open Wednesdays and Fridays 12pm - 2pm during the Oxford University term. Check the website for more information www.pembrokejcrart.org.
