Scholarships & Exhibitions
Scholarships
Scholarships (presently £300 per annum) are awarded automatically to those who achieve a First or Distinction in their First Public Examinations. Candidates are notified of the scholarship immediately results are known in a letter from the Master. The scholarship will take effect from the start of the following academic year irrespective of the timing of the First Public Examination.
Organ Scholarships
Pembroke College aims to have two Organ Scholars in residence at all times. Consequently auditions and interviews will be scheduled accordingly. For the forthcoming years auditions will be held as follows:
- To commence 2010, auditions will be held September 2009
- To commence 2012, auditions will be held September 2011
- To commence 2013, auditions will be held September 2012
Although the Organ Scholar normally studies Music, this is not a requirement and candidates for the post wishing to read other subjects are encouraged to apply
The Chapel features an organ by Fernand Létourneau, installed in 1995 with funding from the Damon Wells endowment. The well-known organist David Titterington, a graduate of the College, was Consultant for the project and eventual design of the instrument. One of only a few examples of Létourneau's work in Europe, it was specifically designed to accommodate the needs of an Oxford chapel in terms both of accompanying choral worship and performing a wide range of organ literature. Following consultation with Gillian Weir and Lawrence Phelps, the organ incorporates a good suspended tracker action and complete two-manual and pedal specification. Since its inauguration by David Titterington it has attracted many celebrated recitalists.
Pembroke has a thriving music society and attracts talented musicians from a wide range of academic disciplines. The Senior Organ Scholar is responsible for the organisation and conduct of the musical side of the chapel services, which consist of Choral Evensong on Sundays, and further services on occasional feast days. The Chapel Choir is a voluntary body which the Senior Organ Scholar must train and direct. The Choral Scholars will be expected to participate fully in the Chapel Choir and to assist the Senior Organ Scholar when necessary. For those who enjoy the challenge of running their own show, the system provides the maximum of encouragement with the minimum of supervision. The Senior Organ Scholar is also expected to act as an animator of other music in the College, and in his/her third year will be responsible for the training the new first-year organ scholar to assist, deputise, and, eventually, to succeed him/her. The Senior Organ Scholar in 2008-2009 is Laurence Lyndon-Jones.
Choral Scholarships
The College sets aside an annual sum to be used either as choral awards or as bursaries, depending which will be most effective during that year. The awards are made by the Academic Director on the recommendation of the Senior Organ Scholar and Chaplain, acting in consultation as appropriate with the Tutors in Music and Singing.
Exhibitions
Those in receipt of a scholarship or exhibition are entitled to wear a Scholars gown and are invited to the Scholars' Dinner which takes place in Michaelmas Term. All Scholarships and Exhibitions are announced in the University Gazette.
