Awards & Prizes available to undergraduate students

Open to all undergraduates:

Sir Roger Bannister Scholarship

The Sir Roger Bannister Scholarship is an annual award worth up to £750. The scholarship is available to an undergraduate in any subject who, in the opinion of The Master and Academic Director, has shown excellent all round performance in both academic and sporting activities. The Scholarship will normally be awarded at the end of a student's second year of study.

The same student may not be awarded both the Sir Roger Bannister Scholarship and the Bannister Medical Scholarship during his/her course of study.

This award is advertised and awarded in Trinity Term.

Ronald Bartlett Prize (Science subjects only)

A £50 book prize is awarded on tutors' recommendation on performance in First Public Examination at the beginning of Michaelmas Term. It is preferred that the award is made to a medical student educated at a state school for the last four years of their secondary education who has both need and merit. However, if there is no such suitable candidate then the prize could be awarded to a student in Engineering, Maths or Physical/Biological Sciences from a state school, with a preference for someone who has lived in the West of England for the previous four years.

George Bredin Travel Fund

First or Second year undergraduates are invited to apply for this annual award of up to £300.
The award is particularly for travel to third world countries with a preference for Africa to carry out research for an educational project. The George Bredin Travel Fund was set up by Old Members of the College in memory of the Bursar of Pembroke from 1950 to 1966. The recipient(s) will be expected to write a report on their trip for the College Record.

Collection Prizes

Collection Prizes (£50 each) are awarded in book vouchers on Tutors' recommendations to undergraduate students who perform at First Class level in their termly collections.

Derbyshire Prize

This prize, worth approximately £85 is awarded annually on tutors' recommendation to all subjects, by rota, for students entering their final year on the basis of the excellence of their general academic performance.

Pier Giorgio Frassati Travel Scholarship

The Pier Giorgio Frassati Travel Scholarship has been created by Pietrojan Gilardini, a former member of Pembroke College. The value of the scholarship is £1000 per annum.

Applicants may be undergraduate or graduate members, not in their final year and prepared to take up the award in the Easter or Long Vacation. The objective of the scholarship is to promote an understanding of environmental problems, their implications for future generations and possible solutions.

Applicants must submit a typed essay of around 3000 words under a pseudonym describing a particular problem which he/she will investigate during his/her travels

The award is advertised in Michaelmas Term and awarded in Hilary.

Hansell Travel Benefaction

This benefaction provides £2,000 per annum for foreign travel for undergraduate students in residence. It is usual for this amount to be shared between several applicants.

This award is advertised and awarded in Hilary Term. Applicants should write stating briefly details of their intended travel and showing that it usefully relates to their subject of study. A letter of support is required from a tutor.

Instrumental Award

This award is equal to the value of a Domus Scholarship (£300) and is open to all First Year undergraduates reading any subject, apart from the Organ Scholar, who is not eligible. The Award is made on the basis of a recital lasting not more than twenty minutes and consisting of one or more pieces. Any instrument, apart from the organ and including the voice, may be offered and candidates must provide their own accompanist if necessary.

This award is advertised in Trinity Term and comes into effect from the following Michaelmas Term.

L.T. Levick Prizes (available for Theology, Oriental Studies, English, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Maths only).

Two prizes of £50 each are awarded in Michaelmas Term on Tutors' recommendation for good performance in Final Honour School examinations in Philosophy and Philology.

Picot Prizes

These prizes are intended to assist undergraduates or graduates in enhancing their educational experience while at the College by undertaking study in an area which is not an essential part of their university course. While the study may be related to that course, that is not a requirement. An example could be to study a foreign the language and culture which is not the subject of the applicant's university course. The study may take place anywhere in the world, and need not involve following a formal course. It must take place over the summer vacation, and be completed before completion of their final examination or (if a graduate) submitted their thesis.

The amount of each prize awarded will be at the discretion of the College, provided that the total amount of money awarded in each year shall not exceed £5,000.

Applications are invited in Michaelmas Term with the closing date in 3rd week of Hilary Term. Students should complete the general application form available on the intranet, setting out the nature of the proposed study in detail, including its costs and a statement from a College tutor or supervisor that the applicant is making good progress in their course or research, that the proposed course of study is not essential to their course or research, and that the applicant's academic work will not be impeded by undertaking the proposed study. Successful applicants will be expected to submit a report on their study after completion. Successful applicants are informed at the end of Hilary Term.

Technos International Event

This rewarding and prestigious event takes place each year in Weeks 7 and 8 of Trinity Term. Four second year undergraduate students and a member of the teaching faculty spend two weeks in Japan at the invitation of the Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust. The event aims to promote international exchange and understanding between the participants and the students and faculty of Technos International Colleges, as well as to offer the group the opportunity to experience and appreciate Japanese life and culture. The costs of international and domestic transportation, accommodation and, to a limited extent, group meals in Japan will be met by Tanaka Ikueikai Educational Trust.

Candidates should have:

  1. a genuine interest in Japan, its people, culture and history;
  2. an excellent academic record;
  3. a willingness to meet people from different racial and cultural backgrounds and experience elements of Japanese culture, living conditions and cuisine which may be foreign;
  4. no previous travel experience in Japan;
  5. little or no proficiency in the Japanese language

The participants who took part in the previous year's event give a presentation of their experiences before applications are invited in Michaelmas Term. The successful participants are informed in Hilary Term.

Vocal Scholarships

Pembroke College has created two Vocal Scholarships which are awarded each year to suitably qualified students studying any subject, whether graduate or undergraduate. The scholars are entitled to sixteen lessons without charge during the year from Nicola Harrison, Tutor in Singing and Interpretation. The lessons entail full voice training with a strong bias for interpretation and performance.

These scholarships were created to attract singers to Pembroke. They differ from choral scholarships in that they do not entail any attachment to choral duties and are entirely for voice training.

Applications are invited in Trinity Term for the following academic year. Auditions take place at the start of Michaelmas Term.

Year of 1954 Fund (in memoriam Peter Prescott)

This fund has been established with money donated by many of those who matriculated at Pembroke in 1954 in recognition of the benefits of their education at Pembroke, and wishing to assist future students to make the most of their experience. The fund has also benefited from a number of donations given in memory of Peter Prescott, a member of the Year of 1954. Both Peter Prescott's contemporaries, and those friends who donated in his memory, wished the fund to commemorate him.

Applications are invited for grants of up to £300 each from second year Home/EU undergraduate students who receive full or partial Government support and require financial assistance to meet necessary academic-related expenses. Applications are invited in Michaelmas Term and should include a tutor's reference.
