McGowin Library
The library provides a mix of core textbooks and useful reference works, IT facilities, as well as a comfortable quiet place to study.
All members of Pembroke college are entitled to access the library 24 hours a day (during term) with self-issue/book-return facilities for out-of-hours. There are around 35000 books on open shelves, covering all of the undergraduate courses in the college. These include multiple copies of core texts, a reference collection, a Study Skills collection, and many foreign language films on DVD.
The open shelf books are catalogued on an easily searchable online library catalogue (OLIS), which also gives access to the holdings of most other libraries around the university. Loan privileges are very generous: books may be borrowed for a whole term or for a vacation.
E-books, a range of reference works, past examination papers, databases etc. are available through the central Bodleian facility accessed from the McGowin library computers, and other places within college.
Access to all Oxford University journal subscriptions is available electronically online, in full text, for members of the college. In addition, the college also subsribes to some print copies of journals including in the subjects of Law, Philosophy and Japanese.
Internet facilities are available to students working in the library through dedicated library computer terminals and wireless access. Power points for personal laptops are fitted on all reader places.
In addition to the college library, all students are entitled to use university departmental, faculty and the Bodleian libraries.
Library staff are available between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and are pleased to answer any queries, either in person or by email at library@pmb.ox.ac.uk.
