Arts
Pembroke College was the first of the Oxford Colleges to have an art collection owned by the JCR and has its own gallery, the Emery Art Gallery.
The Collection was set up in 1947 by Anthony Emery, an undergraduate, who collected £1 from every student and started to buy paintings. It is now considered one of the best collections of post World War II paintings in the country and includes works by John Piper, Patrick Heron, John Minton, Prunella Clough, Elizabeth Frink and Mary Feddon. Pictures are sometimes lent to National Art Galleries and we presently have the Prunella Clough work on loan to Tate Britain and recently loaned a picture to the Ashmolean Museum.
The JCR Art Collection is a focal point of the College and open evenings are sometimes hosted. In Arts Week students are allowed to exhibit their own work in the gallery. Artwork is also lent to students to display in their rooms. The JCR Art Fund has been established as a registered charity which, through investment, provides money for travel and hardship grants to students, as well as for buying art to add to the Collection.
The Collection is open to visitors on certain days of the year and can also be viewed by prior arrangement with the College.
