Oxford is a collegiate university. There are thirty-nine colleges, responsible for admitting all students to the University. They also provide tutorial teaching for undergraduates, facilities for graduates, accommodation and a wide range of social and sporting activities. The University on the other hand organizes lectures, seminars and practicals, sets examinations and confers degrees.
This complicated system may seem daunting, but in fact Oxford is one of the most approachable universities in the world. This is because breaking the University into many small units enables students and prospective students to obtain information and advice suited to their personal circumstances from the right people very easily. These close relationships continue throughout a student's course. The result is a system of undergraduate education which is admired throughout the world. Pembroke is fortunate in enjoying an excellent community spirit among its undergraduate, graduate and senior members. We regard it as our responsibility to do our best to give everyone from all backgrounds an equal chance, if they are qualified, to benefit from this special system.
Oxford is sometimes thought to be reserved for the privileged. This is a myth. The majority of its UK undergraduate students come from the state sector. It actively seeks applicants with social backgrounds where applications to University are less common.
