Academic Dress
Academic dress (sub fusc) is worn at formal university occasions, such as Matriculation and Degree Cermonies, and when taking Public Examinations. It consists of:
For Men
- A dark suit
- Black socks
- Black shoes
- White shirt
- White collar
- White bow tie
- Cap and gown
For Women
- White blouse
- Black tie
- Black skirt or trousers
- Black stockings or tights
- Black shoes
- Dark coat (desired)
- Cap and gown
Women are allowed to wear to carry a square cap or else wear a soft cap. Members serving in HM Forces are permitted to wear uniform underneath the gown. The uniform cap is worn in the street and carried when indoors.
A cap and gown should be worn in the presence of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, the Proctors, and the University Registrar when any of these is acting in an official capacity. Students are also required to wear cap and gown when attending the Proctors' Court. Gowns are worn at University ceremonies, including University sermons.
Graduates of other universities who are reading for higher degrees and diplomas, other than Special Diplomas and the Diploma in Legal Studies, may wear either the graduate student's gown or the academic dress of their own universities. Graduates reading for certificates may wear either a commoner's, or (if appropriate) a scholar's gown, or the academic dress of their own universities. Graduates of other universities reading for Final Honour Schools must wear a commoner's or (if appropriate) a scholar's gown.
