Samuel Johnson is among the most illustrious of Pembroke College's alumni. Although his undergraduate career lasted a mere thirteen months, he continued to feel deep affection for Pembroke. He paid regular visits to the College between 1755 when he published his celebrated Dictionary of the English Language, and 1784, the year of his death.
"Samuel Johnson Tercentenary" – September 2009
From 14th -18th September 2009, Pembroke College hosted ‘Johnson at 300’ – an international conference to celebrate the 300th birthday of one of its most renowned alumni, Dr Samuel Johnson. The four-day event proved to be as wide-ranging and stimulating as the 1984 commemoration organized by Dr David Fleeman, Johnson scholar and Fellow of the College from 1965-1994 – who was himself honoured in a memorial lecture by James McLaverty.
The conference explored the general and the particular Johnson, his life and his works, and the acts of reading and writing about him on the 300th anniversary of his birth.
