Research Interests
I study how the evolution of RNA viruses such as hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV affects important clinical or epidemiological outcomes. Geographical spread, ability to cause disease, resistance to antiviral treatment, to the host’s immune system or newly designed vaccines are all affected by the evolution of these rapidly changing viruses.
I also work on epidemic history of hepatitis C infection in Central and West Africa. Based on the epidemic growth curve and the phylogenetic profile of the viral population we look to identify factors for endemic transmission of the virus. Potentially important factors include iatrogenic transmission due to mass injection treatments, cultural practices such as male or female circumcision, traditional scarification and tattooing or mechanical transmission by biting insects.
